Frieze London
October 14 - 17, 2015
London, UK
Presented sparsely, the works of three Lebanese artist Caline Aoun, Charbel-joseph H. Boutros and Stéphanie Saadé use an aesthetic of fragility and create an ephemera of the personal and the universal. Most of the elements are tied to the artists’ local surroundings, but are grounded in their commonality. The works function in a performative way, each referring to a different cycle, and following its personal rhythm and time.
The artists’ personal narratives define a shared yet divergent vision, presented under the guise of aesthetics and history. Aoun focuses on series of experimental correctives, inversions, and resting places of her direct surrounding. H. Boutros mingles a heritage of conceptual art with romanticism, looking at disappearance as a mode of visual suggestion, conveying historical and intimate meanings. Saadé links together what is usually apart – a real rose coupled with its copy; a faraway horizon reactivated, generating an Artificial Nostalgia.
