Mehreen Murtaza - Biography

 

b. 1986, Riyadh, KSA / Lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan

Mehreen Murtaza's work explores broad themes of human existence and the progresses of modern of civilization. In her work, Murtaza dissects the intersecting worlds of technology and nature. With imagery derived from Sufi culture and the skewed logic of science fiction, she attempts to cultivate universes with dream logics, alternative knowledge, uncertain histories and the creative production of new and perhaps imaginary information.

Mehreen was awarded a fellowship for the grant Follow Fluxus - After Fluxus 2015, at the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden. She has participated in various residencies including the 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial, artist residency in collaboration with the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) Arts Travel Scholarship at Generator Projects, Hospitalfield House, Arbroath, Scotland, & London, UK and Gasworks Residency funded by The Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust - Rangoonwalla Foundation Award, UK.

Her works have been exhibited widely including the 3rd and 5th Moscow International Biennale, Les HTMlles 11 – Zer0 FUTUR{E}, Feminist Festival of Media Arts, 10th IAWRT (International Association of Women in Radio & Television) Asian Women’s Film Festival, Studio Museum in Harlem, 2nd Transnational Pavillion, 55th Venice Biennale, Kunsthalle Gwangju, 3rd Gwangju Biennale, Korea, Cartwright Hall: Bradford City Art Gallery and Museum, UK, and Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden amongst other venues.
